    What Is Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing?

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing verifies that a product operates reliably in its electromagnetic environment, limits emissions to acceptable levels, and withstands electromagnetic interference (EMI) from other sources.

Interference can have serious consequences depending on where it occurs. In the medical field, a pacemaker disrupted by a nearby device can put the patient’s life at risk. The same applies to avionics destabilized by lightning or a high-power radar during a flight carrying hundreds of passengers.

This is why meeting applicable EMC requirements is essential before bringing a product to market. Averna Powered by Spherea designs stations for EMC pre-compliance testing during development, so issues are fixed while they are still inexpensive to correct. This expertise also applies to developing test environments that keep complex equipment fully operational throughout the qualification campaign.

How Averna Powered by Spherea Approaches EMC Testing

Our EMC testing solutions adapt to each program. This can apply to scenarios like early pre-compliance testing on initial prototypes or preparing products for scheduled laboratory qualification campaigns.

    1. EMC Pre-Compliance Testing

Averna runs pre-compliance measurements on prototypes under conditions that closely approximate formal testing, helping identify problems early, when design changes are quicker and less costly to implement.
    2. Preparation and Mitigation

When a product fails a scan or a formal test, the source of the problem must be found quickly. Averna traces each issue to its origin and implements corrective measures, such as enhanced shielding or optimized cable routing. These improvements are then validated through ongoing verification and testing.
    3. Qualification Campaign Support

During qualification, a complex system must keep running inside the chamber as it would in service. Averna delivers a ready-to-use hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment for the lab to support the application throughout the campaign.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing Applications Across Markets

Electromagnetic constraints vary widely depending on where a product operates. Averna Powered by Spherea tailors each EMC test plan to the threats and requirements specific to each unique market.

    Advanced EMC Technologies & Capabilities

Averna’s capabilities target the hardest part of an EMC campaign: keeping the equipment under test operational and observable while it faces aggressive disturbance.

    Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation

Hardware-in-the-loop testing lets a device under test run inside a chamber as if it were installed in the real world. U-TEST®, software-in-the-loop embeds mathematical models and digital twins of its surroundings, closing the loop in real time. Every accessible parameter is timestamped and recorded for analysis or replay, which lets engineers pin an anomaly during an immunity sweep to the exact frequency and moment it appeared.

Conducted and Radiated Emissions and Immunity Testing

Averna covers the core EMC test methods. Conducted emissions and conducted immunity testing address noise traveling along power and signal lines, while radiated emissions and radiated immunity testing address energy carried through the air. Transient and low-frequency phenomena such as ESD, surge, EFT/burst and magnetic field immunity complete the coverage.

    Disturbance-Immune Stimulation and Measurement

Purpose-built hardware drives sensors and reads actuators without picking up the field applied to the device. The platform keeps its own emissions discreet and blocks disturbance propagation through cabling, protecting the validity of each result.

    Multi-Purpose EMC Qualification Platforms

Each platform arrives ready to use, which cuts setup and teardown time at the lab. Once the campaign ends, the same hardware supports software and hardware integration testing, spreading its cost across the program.

EMI Measurement Chain and Test Automation

Averna integrates EMI test receivers, LISNs, BCI probes and RF power amplifiers with automation software that applies the appropriate test settings and procedures according to applicable EMC standards.

    Near-Field Diagnostics and Mitigation Engineering

E-field and H-field probes paired with spectrum analysis localize emissions down to the offending component. Engineers then validate shielding, twisted-pair routing or ferrite fixes on the spot.

    Case Study

EMC Qualification of a DOCSIS Protocol Analyzer

To validate the electromagnetic compatibility of a DOCSIS protocol analyzer, Averna managed a complete EMC qualification campaign combining compliance testing and continuous functional monitoring.

The system remained fully operational throughout testing, allowing engineers to verify both regulatory compliance and product performance under real-world electromagnetic disturbances.

    • Conducted and radiated emissions compliance per CISPR 11 and FCC Part 15 Class A
    • Radiated and conducted RF immunity testing from 150 kHz to 2.7 GHz
    • ESD, EFT and surge immunity validation across power, Ethernet and RF interfaces
    • Continuous software-based functional monitoring during electromagnetic exposure

The DOCSIS protocol analyzer successfully passed all test categories at the specified levels. Conducted and radiated emissions remained within the applicable Class A limits, while RF immunity, ESD, EFT, and surge testing produced no observed performance degradation.

The product also maintained normal operation during shorter voltage dips and interruptions. During a prolonged power interruption, manual intervention was required to restore operation, consistent with the applicable acceptance criterion.

The project illustrates the importance of combining standardized EMC measurements with continuous functional monitoring to verify not only regulatory compliance but also product behavior during electromagnetic exposure.
