At the speed of light: MergeOptics tests ultra-fast lasers with flexible Averna system

Montreal, Canada, January 15, 2009 – Global test engineering company Averna is pleased to announce that Germany-based optical communications solution provider MergeOptics GmbH has purchased an Averna Photonics Burn-in & Life-test System for high-accuracy laser diode testing. MergeOptics, selected as one of Germany’s 25 most promising tech companies in 2008, will use the fully modular system to test its multi-position VCSEL arrays throughout the development and production lifecycle. Averna will showcase its complete line of photonics test systems at SPIE Photonics West in San Jose, CA from January 27 to 29, 2009.

MergeOptics will perform full LIV sweeps in different software-controlled temperature zones using the Photonics Burn-in & Life-test System’s hot swappable and industry-proven modular design. High-accuracy techniques will allow for direct probing on device bond pads.

“We have chosen this Averna system because it gives us the capability to perform burn-in test on the lowest level of value added for our VCSEL arrays, very early in the component lifecycle,” said Dag Neumeuer, CEO of MergeOptics GmbH. “We were also won over by the scalability and flexibility of the system.”

A team of Averna business development representatives will converge at SPIE Photonics West to conduct hands-on demonstrations of high-power, low-power, and benchtop versions the Photonics Burn-in & Life-test System. Visitors will also discover how to cut test costs with Proligent™, a test engineering platform by Averna that delivers control and insight into dynamic design and manufacturing.

Photonics Burn-in & Life-test System by Averna
Built on nearly two decades of leadership and innovation in photonics test, Averna’s Photonics Burn-in & Life-test Systems form a complete line of modular, high-accuracy solutions for dramatically heightened test productivity. Off-the-shelf low-power (< 1Amp) and high-power (1 – 200Amp) systems are fully customizable, and are available in benchtop versions for minimal footprint. These modular systems offer multiple software-controlled temperature zones, the ability to test different devices in a single system, and the unequalled flexibility to scale up from 16 to 2048 devices, ideal for both development and production environments.

About MergeOptics GmbH
MergeOptics GmbH was founded in Germany, in September 2000 and develops highly integrated components and modules for the rapidly growing optical communication market. The company integrates optical components (lasers, modulators and photo diodes) with high-frequency electrical circuits to create compact modules that operate with industry standard optical and electrical interfaces. MergeOptics’ business objective is to specialize in high-speed optical products that are world-class for both integration and performance. MergeOptics has partnerships with several leading German universities and research facilities, including the prestigious Heinrich-Hertz-Institute in Berlin, Germany.
